THE COOPER UNION
NEW YORK, NY

We make interdisciplinary things.

miliLab uses mathematics to bring together engineering, art, and architecture.

It was founded by Mili Shah, a Professor of Mathematics at The Cooper Union. Projects are intentionally collaborative and often move between theory, software, hardware, and design.

PROJECTS

ROBOTICS + INTERACTION

Using mathematics to design and build robotic systems that sense, move, interact, and respond to the world.

EXO GAMES 2026

Student-designed exoskeleton work developed, built, tested, and showcased at the 2026 Exo Games.

MARIONETTE

Browser-based body tracking transformed into an interactive visual system for movement, play, and expression.

MARVIN

A low-cost robot controlled through human motion, combining body tracking, robotics, and human-robot interaction.

MATH + ART + FABRICATION

Using mathematics to explore art, fashion, and design through physical and digital objects.

BRIDGES 2024

Mathematical fabrication and wearable design using Voronoi structures as both visual language and physical form.

CUSTOM 3D CASTS

Using mathematical design and digital fabrication to create customized three-dimensional wearable forms.

COOPER UNION FASHION SHOW

Student work bringing mathematics, fabrication, wearable design, and fashion together at The Cooper Union.

BODY TRACKING + COMPUTER VISION

Using mathematics and computer vision to understand movement and create interactive experiences.

EXOSKELETON EVALUATIONS

Using computer vision and body tracking to evaluate human movement with exoskeletons.

MENSCHEL BODY TRACKING

Body tracking and motion capture used as the technical foundation for an interactive installation.

CAMERA CALIBRATION

Comparative evaluation and refinement of linear-algebra-based camera calibration algorithms.

WEARABLES + ETEXTILES

Using mathematics to integrate sensing and computation into textiles, clothing, and other wearable forms.

E-TEXTILE ORIGAMI ACCORDION

An origami-inspired musical interface using textile sensing, electronics, and physical interaction.

WIRELESS ETEXTILE PRESSURE SENSORS

Low-cost wireless pressure sensors fabricated using piezoresistive electronic textiles.

ETEXTILES
